about

this is not music "about" anything, in that it is not music which was made by taking anything in particular as its initiating subject, its "inspiration", etc... in forming it into definitive versions for some kind of life as reproducible media, however, this particular document of this music has partly become a document of: the frustration of collapsing version history, of halting the ongoing process of transformation we often call "creativity", of freezing things into singular forms, of severing things from the places they grow. reproducible media seems to demand killing something to finish it.

for better or worse, the degree to which anything is actually reproducible is up for debate. every pair of headphones or speakers through which reproducible media is played, every room or space where it is heard, co-create an infinitely varying experience. ambient sound from the world around is often part of the show, and hermetic silence merely adds one to that infinity. if that one were truly an invalidating threat to the rest, people would stop listening to music every other way they do, would stop doing other activities while music is playing. but they don't, because music continues be useful or meaningful to humans in all modes of experience.

objects of reproducible media, then, are objects that perform, and performance eludes exact reproduction. it's why "i was there" ever means anything. this often frustrates musicians and engineers alike, who at large seem to idealize perfect "mix" for a track or an album as something that might seem to alter less through these various theaters of meaning. i, however, relax into this multiplicity, comforted to know it will keep changing after all.

meaning making is all around.
